Roll2Rail intends to carry out the basic research and validation process so as to prove the feasibility (from TRL1 to TRL3) of that subset of key, radical, innovations. Then, higher TRL work will be taken over by the SHIFT2RAIL activities, whose scope includes full technology demonstrators (TRL7).
Positioning of the project
Most of the developments in the scope of Roll2Rail project will achieve TRL 3 or 4. However, the alignment of this project with the long term demonstration program SHIFT2RAIL will bring these technologies up to TRL7. Roll2Rail will impact not only in the specific objectives for rolling stock but also in other areas of the railway system, included in SHIFT2RAIL as Innovation Programmes (IP):
